| Clay mock-ups for the 1956 Chevy - all from May 1954 - indicate that the taillight design was decided early on. Note that all of these studies feature a large rear wheel opening similar to the 1955 Nomad, but which did not make it to production on the 1956 models, Nomad included. Four cars (Pics #2, #3, #5 & #9) sport variations of the 1953-54 Bel Air rear fender trim. The side trim in cars Pics #7, #8, #11 & #12 was intended for the '56 Bel Air but actually ended up on the 150 Series. The grille design started out as an exaggerated '55 grille (Pics #7 & #9), but by October 1954 had evolved into the production version (Pics #10 & #12). One grille (Pic #1) actually predicted the '57 front end. Vertical headlight pods also received serious consideration (Pics #5, #6, #7 & #9). | |||

| 1956 Model Production in the USA | |||
| In 1956, as in 1955, the
2 top leaders in production and sales were the 4 Door Sedans. The
price difference between the B/A Trim package and the 210 Trim package on
the 4 Door Sedans was only $113.00, but it was sufficient enough to make
16,459 Chevrolet car-buyers choose the 210 4 Door Sedan over the B/A 4
Door Sedan.
There were 298,935 210 4 Door Sedans produced in 1956, and there are still many of them out there like this one, waiting to pound the streets again! The 210 2 Door Sedan with a retail price of $1,982.00 came in third, while the more deluxe B/A 2 Door Sedan which again cost an additional $113.00, came in sixth. Chevrolet introduced the 4 Door Hardtop in 1956, and it saw the B/A version fare well, coming in at 7th position, while the 210 version ranked number 13 out of the 19 different models offered in 1956. |
